Your Japanese Sushi Guide: Exploring XOXO Sushi Bar’s Menu

Japanese sushi in a box

Japanese Sushi arrives in various shapes and sizes and breathtaking displays. Most of the time, a sushi display will look so elegant that it will leave you lost and confused, whether you don’t know if you should start eating or take a picture first. The main point we are trying to say here is that every type of sushi is a work of art and perfect in its unique way. There are so many types of Japanese sushi on our menu, so it will be difficult to explore every one, but for now, we will highlight some of our favorite types below.

Sashimi

Even though sashimi does not include rice, it is still considered sushi and a known delicacy. This rice-less cuisine is thinly sliced and almost always served raw. Sashimi can sometimes be cooked, but that mainly occurs within eel cuisines. One fun fact about sashimi is that it usually comes with just sauces and rarely with toppings because it is the epitome of fresh fish flavor that is perfect just the way it is.

Nigiri

Nigiri comprises two main ingredients: a bed of rice and a thin slice of raw fish perfectly placed on top. This type of sushi is a simple classic, and there’s nothing complicated about it, especially compared to the other types of sushi. Nigiri’s flavors and textures are unlike any other, making it a certified pillarstone within the Japanese sushi inventory.

Chu-Toro

Chu-Toro is a medium-fat tuna derived from the back and sides of bluefin. It has a rich, sweet, out-of-this-world flavor and an unmatched texture that will melt in your mouth. Chu-Toro is considered one of the best tuna cuts in the world.

Hamachi

Hamachi is a popular Japanese yellow-tail fish commonly found in many sushi dishes. This tender cuisine is rich in flavor and contains a high-fat content, providing an excellent buttery texture. Hachami is most commonly served and eaten as nigiri, but sometimes, it is also a sashimi!

Shima Aji

Shima Aji, also known as “striped jack,” is found off the Japanese coast in shallow water and is one of Japan's most popular sushi types. Its taste is similar to Yellow Tail, with a light buttery texture and containing a small amount of fat. The texture is considered more “oily” and has a fishier taste. It is a favorite amongst sushi fanatics!
